CNN —An awards ceremony curveball indeed: Emma Stone, winner of the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Poor Things,” dealt with a sartorial snafu just moments before she took the stage to accept her trophy. “My dress is broken,” Stone appeared to mouth while en route to receive her Academy Award. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she explained, referencing Ryan Gosling’s performance of his song from the “Barbie” movie — and, presumably, some dance moves she’d indulged in (because who wouldn’t boogie down with Gosling should the opportunity present itself?). And perhaps most infamously, Jennifer Lawrence, who was on stage with Stone tonight (as one of the former Best Actress winners who introduced this year’s nominees), took a tumble when accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in 2013 due to the hemline on her cascading Dior Haute Couture gown. Lawrence, along with the other former winners, helped usher Stone off-stage.

SOLDEU, Andorra (AP) — Marta Bassino edged out Federica Brignone for an Italian one-two finish in a tight opening run of a women’s World Cup giant slalom Saturday. Mikaela Shiffrin sits out this weekend’s races to nurse a left knee injury and the American star could lose her lead in the overall World Cup standings to Lara Gut-Behrami. The Swiss skier won the previous GS and trails Shiffrin by 95 points. In Saturday's race, Bassino showed glimpses of her best as the Italian skier looked for her first podium result of the season. She won the World Cup title in the discipline in 2021 but has won just one World Cup race over the last three years.

American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin will skip giant slalom and slalom races this weekend in Andorra to give her knee more time to mend. Shiffrin, who’s chasing her sixth overall World Cup title this season, was hurt in a crash nearly two weeks ago during a downhill event at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Although she avoided major damage to her left knee, she said she’s dealing with an MCL sprain along with a sprain of the tibiofibular ligament. She added that she continues to recover from a bone bruise she suffered at the start of the season. “I really want to do this right,” Shiffrin said Wednesday of her recovery.

Wilders' win sent a warning shot to mainstream parties across Europe ahead of European Parliament elections next June, which will likely be fought on the same issues as the Dutch election: immigration, cost of living and climate change. A fan of former U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungary's eurosceptic Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Wilders is openly anti-Islam, and anti-EU and said "the Netherlands will be returned to the Dutch." "I would be very happy to become the Dutch prime minister, of course," Wilders told party members who welcomed him with champagne and cake, adding that he was willing to negotiate. "But the first thing is a significant restriction on asylum and immigration," Wilders said. The author is less concerned with the cosmetic in contemporary pop culture (a shout-out to Taylor Swift’s cat-eye is mercifully brief), and more about the “glorious and profound histories swirling around” it — particularly how people of color continue to turn to it as an essential part of their heritage. She takes us on a whirlwind tour: to the Neues Museum in Berlin, where the bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti, dating to between 1351 and 1334 B.C., sits behind bulletproof glass; to the Chari-Baguirmi region of Chad, where Wodaabe men not only wear liner on days they perform in the annual Worso festival, but carry mirrors “to keep their looks, especially their kohl, in check”; to Iran, where its cosmetic use, according to one woman, is “a tool for female empowerment and civil disobedience.”We visit Petra, Jordan, to meet Bedouin hunks, some cave-dwelling, who admit they use kohl “because they are aware that women, mainly white tourists, may find them more attractive that way.”Hankir also explores the “expressive and transgressive” “winged” chola aesthetic rocked by young Mexican American women in Southern California, along with the Indian classical dance performance kathakali, for which male performers in Kerala carefully pile on the kajal for an hour before taking the stage.
